We want your experience to be as pleasant as possible, so here is some information to help explain what a typical emergency hospital visit is like. |
| |
| ARRIVAL |
| |
When you arrive, you will be greeted by a medical professional (nurse/doctor) who will determine the severity of your illness or injury. This is called the “triage process.” A triage nurse will take you temperature, pulse and blood pressure and ask you questions about your medical history. |
| |
Those with more serious emergencies are seen first. This means that sometimes people with less severe emergencies may need to wait longer. |
| |
| If you carry a note or letter from your GP, doctor or a hospital, please present upon arrival. |
| |
As we may not be aware of your medical background, you will be asked many questions. Sometimes this needs to be done by more than one health care worker. |

| WHILE YOU ARE HERE |
| |
Patients with minor emergencies normally are seen by a nurse practitioner first followed by emergency doctor and sometimes by a senior specialist. Sometimes the doctor may be delayed if a more seriously injured or ill patient arrives. |
| |
| If you are unable to speak or understand the language we may offer you services of an interpreter. |
| |
We ask that you do not eat or drink before being seen. You may need tests or procedures that require you not to eat or drink beforehand. Speak to the triage nurse if you have any questions about this. |
| |
| MONITORING |
| |
You may be attached to a monitor that provides information about your progress. This information can be seen at all times at the monitor. The monitoring equipment is very sensitive, so you might hear an alarm when you move. |
| |
| TESTING |
| |
Your doctor may order blood tests or X-rays, ultrasound examination or CT / MRI scans if you must leave the department for a test, an emergency department staff will take you. Please ask the doctor or nurse if you do not understand a test or procedure. Lab test results may take approximately one hour. Other tests such as X-rays and those requiring special preparation may take appropriate time. It is always our effort to obtain the results and reports of the tests early as possible however some special tests may take time to offer results. |
| |
| TREATMENT |
| |
When your test results are available, your doctor will explain them, let you know if you need additional testing and recommend a treatment or admission. Treatment may be simple or complex. Sometimes splints, bandages, IVs or medications may be necessary, and treatment time can last a few minutes or several hours. You may be referred to one or more specialists. Doctor will explain if any procedure is carried out and written consent may be needed for some procedures. |
